Surface Coating Technology
New developments in this field allow design and manufacturing engineers to increase the life of parts and tools several times over, significantly improving performance (operating temperature, speed, contact load, fatigue life, etc) while at the same time reducing the overall cost of equipment manufacturing and maintenance, and increasing operational safety. The ability to develop two independent sets of requirements, one for the part material (strength, mass, cost, etc.) and the second set for its surface (friction coefficient, hardness, corrosion resistance, electrical, wetting and other properties – at very high level of performance), offers unprecedented possibilities and flexibility in the design process. These technology capabilities are broadened and enhanced by Surface Science Corporation (SSC) ability to advance the process from the laboratory to large-scale industrial use in the most demanding applications. Our technology proved itself repeatedly in heavy-duty stamping, forging, die-casting and plastics tooling, as well as in high wear mechanical parts, while handling part sizes and conditions beyond the reach of any competing coating methods. SSC uses efficient nanotechnology techniques in controlling the grain size of the coating down to a few nanometers. As a result, a broad range of opportunities for the control of the properties of the interface and the coating layers becomes available, far beyond present limits. Our present capabilities for production and development offer a wide range of military applications, some of them described here. We will work with our customers to develop new applications, limited in scope more by the user imagination than by the technology capabilities.
